ADHD in adults

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can continue into adulthood. It may affect concentration, organisation, time management, impulsivity and restlessness, but the way it affects daily life differs between people.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Disorganisation, forgetfulness or losing track of tasks
  • Trouble managing time or completing work
  • Restlessness or feeling driven to keep moving
  • Impulsive decisions or interrupting
  • Symptoms often begin in childhood, even if recognised later

Warning signs

A sudden new change in concentration, confusion, severe mood change, thoughts of self-harm, or problems affecting immediate safety needs prompt in-person assessment. Do not assume new symptoms are ADHD without review.

For immediate danger, call Rescue 1122 or seek emergency care.

Possible causes

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. It is linked with differences in brain development and function, and genetic factors are important. It is not caused by laziness or poor parenting.

Risk factors

  • Family history
  • ADHD traits or symptoms in childhood
  • Co-existing learning, anxiety, mood, sleep or substance-use difficulties
  • Early-life factors may contribute in some people

Diagnosis

A qualified clinician completes a detailed assessment of current symptoms, childhood history, daily functioning and other possible explanations. A short online form alone cannot diagnose ADHD.

Common tests / investigations

  • Clinical interview and validated assessment tools
  • History from childhood or someone who knows the person well when available
  • Review for sleep, mood, anxiety, substance use or physical-health contributors
  • No single blood test or brain scan confirms ADHD

General treatment overview

Support may include ADHD-focused education, practical organisation strategies, psychological therapy or clinician-prescribed medication. The choice depends on individual needs, health history and a specialist assessment.

Lifestyle guidance

Use a simple daily routine, one task list, reminders and regular sleep. Bring examples of work, study or home difficulties and any previous assessments to a clinic consultation.

Prevention

ADHD cannot be prevented by willpower. Early recognition and appropriate support can reduce its impact on education, work and wellbeing.
